From the Willamette Week
Think it's hard to find Indonesian and Malaysian classics around these parts? Just visit the fine little outpost known as Taste of Bali. Entrees range from bamboo-skewered grilled chicken smothered in Malaysian peanut sauce to rich Indonesian beef stew. Prices hover between $4.50 and $7, leaving you plenty of pocket coin to splurge on a few scrumptious sides like spring rolls or lumpia, a sweet pork-filled wonton, rolled and deep-fried to golden perfection.

"Selamat Datang," are the words of welcome that greet visitors to this clean, bright little spot in downtown Portland, where the food of Indonesia, Bali and Malaysia is featured. A couple of ceramic masks, a shadow puppet, a mural and a few posters suggest the flavor of the culture from which this cuisine has sprung. Illustrations of the selections offer the uninitiated customer a glimpse into what they might be ordering. The service is fast, friendly and up beat. Vegetarians will have ample choices. The words "Terima Kasih," meaning "thank you" are seen on the way out.

Another from Willamette Week
Incongruously located a couple doors down from the Heathman, this enclave of Southeast Asian cooking provides a welcome break from bad bento and banal burritos, the predominant downtown ethnic fare. Regrettably rare here in honkytown, Indonesian food, usually served over rice or noodles, is full of chilies, lime juice, peanuts, coconut milk and dried shrimp. For an introduction to Taste of Bali's fine version of Indo chow, try the satay ayam malaysia, skewered chicken in a peppery peanut sauce, or sayur lodeh, mixed vegetables stewed in coconut milk with tempeh. The caffeinated beverages and desserts (particularly the es cendol--a concoction of mung beans and coconut milk) are wonderful examples of the Indonesian love of syrupy-sweet condensed milk. The atmosphere is sedate, with only a few airline posters and tourist trinkets to remind you where you are. Fortunately, the manager, a hyperkinetic Filipino named Donny Estrada keeps the joint jumping. (NJ)

This restaurant features Indonesian-Malaysian cuisine served in a cafeteria-like atmosphere. The staff is friendly and attentive, with the owners treating the guests like family members. The restaurant preserves the real ethnic flavor of the island culture where the pace is unhurried and the hospitality is first rate. Portions are large and the tastes are memorable.

Taste of Bali - It's not only the best value in downtown but you'll excite your taste buds! This family who runs the restaurant welcomes people with a hearty "Hello My Friend" and they keep the smiles coming. The food is great and the entire menu is inexpensive. Even though the name is Taste of Bali and most of the menu is based on Malaysian and Indonesian food, you'll occasionally see Pot Roast and Meat Loaf on the specials board! We love their Chicken Curry, regardless if it over rice or in their soup.
